How to Buy Quality Cinnamon

Most supermarket "cinnamon" is not what you think. Learn how to identify genuine Ceylon cinnamon, read labels, avoid fakes, and find trusted sources.

Reading the Label

What to look for — and what to avoid — when inspecting a cinnamon product label.

Cinnamomum verum (on the label)

This is the Latin name for true Ceylon cinnamon. Its presence guarantees authenticity.

Country of origin: Sri Lanka

Authentic Ceylon cinnamon is primarily grown in Sri Lanka. Some may come from Madagascar or Seychelles.

Just says 'Cinnamon' with no Latin name

Without a Latin name, it's almost certainly Cassia. Don't assume it's Ceylon.

"True cinnamon" or "Ceylon cinnamon" in the name

Marketing names that often (but not always) correlate with genuine Ceylon. Still verify the Latin name.

Standardized to X% cinnamaldehyde

Standardized extracts have guaranteed potency. Look for 1-4% cinnamaldehyde in quality supplements.

Third-party tested / COA available

Certificate of Analysis confirms identity and purity. Reputable brands publish these on request.

No listed coumarin content

Transparent brands will mention low coumarin content. Absence of this info is a yellow flag.

5 Tests to Identify Quality Cinnamon

Simple tests you can do at home to verify you have genuine Ceylon.

📜

The Quill Test

Authentic Ceylon cinnamon rolls into thin, papery quills with multiple layers — like a cigar. Cassia has a single thick layer that doesn't roll. If you can snap it cleanly like hard wood, it's Cassia.

🎨

The Color Test

Ceylon is tan to light brown — almost sandy. Cassia is much darker (reddish-brown to dark brown). If the stick looks dark and hard, it's almost certainly Cassia.

👅

The Taste Test

Ceylon has a mild, delicate, mildly sweet flavor with floral notes. Cassia is bold, spicy, and intensely 'cinnamon' — the flavor most people associate with the spice.

💰

The Price Test

Genuine Ceylon cinnamon costs significantly more — often 5-10x the price of Cassia. If it seems too cheap, it's almost certainly Cassia. Quality Ceylon supplement capsules should cost $15-35 for 60 capsules.

👃

The Smell Test

Ceylon has a complex, soft, sweet aroma. Cassia smells sharper and more medicinal. Open the jar — if it almost makes your eyes water, it's Cassia.

Red Flags to Avoid

  • "Pure Cinnamon" without specifying Ceylon or Cinnamomum verum
  • Extremely low price (under $5 for a large bottle of capsules)
  • No country of origin listed
  • No third-party testing or COA available
  • Vague health claims like "cures diabetes" or "guaranteed to lower blood sugar"
  • Sold loose in bulk bins without clear labeling
